Frampton was a bonfire builder during his younger days growing up in the Tiger's Bay area of Belfast
Carl Frampton has condemned the burning of Ireland flags and effigies at bonfires ahead of the 12th of July. The North Belfast ex-professional boxer was speaking ahead of his appearance at a cultural convention discussing topics affecting the unionist community including bonfires, policy, marching bands, and the arts.
He told Belfast Live: "For me, around the 11th or 12th when I was a young kid, it was genuinely almost as big as Christmas for us. I remember the street parties and I remember the bonfires obviously being lit on the 11th night then the parades on the 12th. It was just a time, for me anyway being where I came from, to be involved in a celebration.
On changes that need to be made to make celebrations more positive, the 37-year-old said: "I think there's still some work that needs to be done around the communities and maybe a bit of education as well, but these are all things that can happen in good time. "You get a bad rap straight away for doing that. Even burning the tricolour on top of the bonfire, you're burning another nation's flag, I don't think that should happen either.
