Caroline Hirons, a renowned skincare expert, criticizes the phrase 'growing old gracefully,' arguing it's a sexist term applied solely to women. She advocates for a science-backed approach to beauty and avoids discussions about women's appearances, deeming them superficial.
Skincare expert Caroline Hirons has expressed her disdain for the phrase 'growing old gracefully,' arguing that it's a term exclusively applied to women. Hirons maintains that her personal motto is to prevent anyone from uttering anything to her that wouldn't be said to a man. She has admitted to feeling immense irritation when people use that particular phrase, especially directed at her.
'What does that even mean, growing old gracefully? Do you let your hair turn gray, neglect your skin, skip the gym, and abandon healthy eating? Where exactly do you draw the line?' she questioned.Hirons avoids engaging in public discourse about women's appearances, finding it overly simplistic and reductive. She stated, 'I'm simply not interested. If all you have to say about a woman is what she looks like, then you're a troll.' She asserted that regardless of one's profession, whether in media or writing, reducing a woman's worth to her looks signifies a lack of depth and intelligence. 'I look at my friends and think about how funny, intelligent, intuitive, empathetic they are,' she emphasized. Hirons believes that science should guide the beauty industry's trajectory. She stated, 'I'm not driven by trends; I'm guided by science, proof, and clinical trials. I'm also influenced by what consumers are telling me they're not getting from their current products, whether from my line or another.' Her popular podcast, 'Glad We Had This Chat,' is currently on tour, with a scheduled stop at Dublin's Olympia Theatre on February 24th.
