The Irish Mirror highlighted the case of Kylie Ann Stewart (10) earlier this week. The Donegal schoolgirl is one of 327 children across the country in need of surgery for scoliosis, a disease which causes a sideways curvature of the spine.
It is “cruel” that a 10-year-old child is no longer able to sit in her wheelchair due to the deterioration of her scoliosis, Sinn Féin’s David Cullinane. The Donegal schoolgirl is one of 327 children across the country in need of surgery for scoliosis, a disease which causes a sideways curvature of the spine.
Kylie’s mum Catherine told the Irish Mirror that her daughter’s spine is so curved that she cannot sit in the wheelchair because of the friction it causes against her back. She lies on the floor to help her pain. Mr Cullinane admitted that there are “no simple solutions” to the crisis as he acknowledged that the absence of one spinal surgeon is affecting services. Consultant paediatric orthopaedic surgeon Connor Green is currently on leave from Temple Street as an investigation on spinal surgeries is conducted.
Mr Cullinane explained: “Two weeks ago, Stephen Donnelly came in and said, ‘We made this investment of €19m. I got a commitment from CHI by the end of that year no child will wait longer than four months’.
