What was once the heartbeat of Ulster GAA lies derelict.

When Ireland and the UK's joint bid to host EURO 2028 was approved in Nyon this morning, two stadiums set to stage matches do not currently have the capabilities to do so.

Situated on the Anderstown Road in the West of the city, Casement Park opened it's doors in 1953 and swiftly became the home of GAA in Northern Ireland. A decade and a half ago, the Northern Irish executive decided that all three of the major sporting stadiums in Northern Ireland needed to be redeveloped. To date, Casement Park remains the only stadium untouched.

2006 - Plans unveiled for 42,500 seater multi-purpose stadium that can house all three sports unveiled. The stadium was to be built at the Maze Prison which held republican paramilitary prisoners during the troubles. Unsurprisingly, the proposed location caused backlash and plans were scrapped.
