Cat owners have been issued a stark warning to 'act now' or face the possibility of a hefty £500 fine due to an impending change in the law. Starting from June 10, it will be mandatory for all cats to be microchipped and registered by the time they reach 20 weeks old.
The task of reuniting lost or stolen pet cats with their owners can be a daunting challenge for veterinary practices, animal welfare groups and local councils when the animals are not microchipped. Microchipping is a relatively inexpensive and straightforward procedure that can prevent the distress of potentially losing a pet forever or not having closure if something tragic occurs, reports Birmingham Live.
How do cats get microchipped? The process of microchipping is a quick, simple and painless procedure that involves inserting a chip, about the size of a grain of rice, under the animal's skin. This microchip carries a unique serial number, which the owner must register on a national database. Cats Matter said: "We are so pleased the Government have brought in this law after years of campaigning, but we remain concerned about the scanning system that compliments it. We have remained clear to DEFRA that, for microchipping to work in practice, chips must be scanned.
