NEW: CDC reports up to 31 cases of monkeypox in US
In total, 12 states, including California, Washington, Virginia, and Hawaii, as well as the nation's capital, all have confirmed cases after a global outbreak of the virus, according to data updated Monday by the CDC. The 31 figure reported by the agency is for monkeypox and the viruses encompassed by its genus, orthopoxvirus, which also includes smallpox.
The CDC also raised its monkeypox alert for travelers to Level 2 on Monday, encouraging U.S. travelers to avoid close contact with sick individuals, including those with skin lesions or genital lesions, and to avoid contact with dead or live wild animals, including rats, squirrels, monkeys, and apes.
