Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy has decided that the Regional Independents supporting the government are not eligible to form a Dail technical group for opposition speaking time. Murphy stated she made her decision after carefully considering legal advice and submissions. Social Democrats acting leader Cian O'Callaghan welcomed the ruling, stating it confirms what opposition parties have been saying and puts an end to this issue.

The Ceann Comhairle has ruled that the Regional Independents who have supported the government are not entitled to form a Dail technical group for the purposes of opposition speaking time .

"As Ceann Comhairle, I have tonight made a determination in relation to the recognition of the Regional Technical Group. I have come to my conclusion having carefully considered legal advice, submissions and other materials which are in the public domain," she explained. "I have decided that the Group are not eligible for recognition under Standing Order 170. The full text of my ruling is attached and also see the timeline of events leading to this decision," she concluded.

“Government backbenchers cannot masquerade as members of the Opposition in a cynical attempt to avail of Opposition speaking rights.
