John Cooney, a 28-year-old Celtic champion boxer, will be laid to rest in his native Co Galway on Friday following his tragic death. Cooney died over the weekend, a week after he was hospitalized due to injuries sustained during a fight at the Ulster Hall in Belfast. The boxer suffered an intracranial hemorrhage and passed away despite treatment at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital. His funeral mass will take place on Friday at the Church of St. John the Apostle in Galway.
The 28-year-old died over the weekend, one week after he was taken to hospital following a fight at the Ulster Hall in Belfast.
"Deeply mourned and very sadly missed also by his grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, his many relatives and friends at home, abroad and in the wider boxing community." Meanwhile, Cooney's heartbroken family have encouraged his devastated opponent to fight on in the Galway man's honour.
