However, Usman has been talking about taking on Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in a boxing ring recently, something that has left UFC boss Dana White very confused.“How is he going to fight Canelo? I don’t understand,” Chimaev said on“The only people who want to see Canelo and him are only him and his manager. Did you see how he hit pads?“We have to be realistic about it and the guy is not that level in the boxing.
“I understand how it works. The guy all his life did boxing, he knocked out – he killed so many good guys. How [Usman] can say, ‘I’m going to knock him out’? I understand he wants to make money.” And with that last point, Chimaev says it all. Canelo has suggested himself that Usman is just looking for a payday and given that fact that boxing is generally a more lucrative sport than UFC – at least at the top – and Canelo is probably the number one draw in the world right now, it’s easy to see why.Getty Images - GettyThe Nigerian Nightmare, 34, is unbeaten in the UFC and has defended his title five times already. Usman is 20-1 overall and on an 18-fight win streak.
Still, Chimaev believes that Jon Jones, the former light-heavyweight champion whose only loss was a DQ that Dana White wants overturned, is actually the pound-for-pound king.
