The New Orleans Saints have waived kicker Charlie Smyth just two weeks before the start of the new NFL season following the signing of free agent Daniel Carlson. Both kickers featured in the Saints' final pre-season match against the Dallas Cowboys, a 27-24 victory, with Carlson landing a 54-yard field goal in the closing minutes. Smyth, who joined via the International Player Pathway in 2024 and made 12 of 16 field goals last season, could still be retained on the practice squad as IPP players do not count towards the roster limit. Carlson, a two-time All-Pro, began his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings before moving to the LA Raiders. The Saints open their season against the Detroit Lions on 13 September.

— New Orleans Saints August 29, 2026 Advertisement Down native Smyth joined the Saints via the International Player Pathway in 2024. Last season he featured in six games, making 12 of 16 field goals. He cemented his place after Blake Grupe was cut. Carlson is a two-time All-Pro who started his NFL career at the Minnesota Vikings in 2018, before moving to the LA Raiders later that year.
