Patrick Nugent was 23 years old when he died following a private party at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park in Clare in February 1984. Mr Nugent was the banqueting manager at the venue.

The exhumation of the body of a young chef who died in mysterious circumstances 40 years ago began yesterday as part of a new investigation. Gardai hope advances in investigation methods, a new postmortem and fresh interviews with 100 witnesses will bring new information to light.

It later transpired his injuries were consistent with being struck by a vehicle. Mr Ryan was charged with manslaughter but acquitted at his jury trial. An investigation team from the Clare Garda division has now been established at Shannon Garda station led by a senior investigating officer. More than 100 witnesses who attended the party are being interviewed, and the scene at the car park has been re-examined by a forensic collision investigator.

Inspector Finnerty has appealed to anyone who may have information on the young chef’s death “not to assume” that gardai already know, or it has “limited value”. He added: “Let us make that decision. I cannot reiterate that enough.I would urge person with information in relation to the death of Patrick Nugent to contact the incident room at Shannon Garda Station on 061 365900, the Garda confidential number 1800 666 111 or any member of An Garda Siochana at any Garda station.
