Dutch choreographer Cherish Menzo's latest piece, *Darkmatter*, presented at the Dublin Theatre Festival 2024, blends sci-fi horror with Afrofuturism. The dance features two mysterious figures in a gloomy clearing, their movements evoking a chilling atmosphere and exploring themes of fear and control.

Dublin Theatre Festival 2024: The Dutch choreographer Cherish Menzo’s eventful piece has a frightening otherworldlinessIn a gloomy clearing on the edge of a dirt field we find two mysterious hooded figures whose faces are hidden behind reflective visors. One is kneeling over the other, their hand covering a wound where bluish-black liquid appears to be oozing out. True to its astronomical title, the Dutch choreographer Cherish Menzo’s eventful dance Darkmatter seems out of this world.

As it happens we’re not in a totally different universe. When Menzo raps verses full of awareness before floating hauntingly into recognisably playful hip rolls and bounces, the dance seems to draw on the synthesising effects of Afrofuturism, recombining hip-hop and black wariness into a startling new version of our reality.
