Black and Latino caucuses on the City Council have been at odds over a new ward map.

Black Chicago aldermen and other City Council members who back their vision for the city’s ward map ratcheted up the tension Tuesday in a standoff with their Latino colleagues.

On Tuesday, council Rules Committee Chair Ald. Michelle Harris, 8th, said she still hopes a deal is reached but she also made pointed comments toward Latino Caucus Chair Ald. Gilbert Villegas, 36th.“Gil Villegas, let me know when you’re serious, when you’re serious about coming into the room and working on the map,” Harris said at a City Hall news conference.

“This is a win for 15 alderpeople, community groups and others who want to take the politics out of this process, and stop these decisions from being made behind closed doors,” he said. “We’re going to let the people decide.” That’s what happened in 1992, when the ensuing court fight dragged on for years and ran up a $20 million tab. Taxpayers could be on the hook for twice that amount this time, Harris has said.
