Minister Humphreys promises that the change is about 'putting money back in the pockets of working families'
Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys has announced the extension of Child Benefit to include 18-year-olds from today, Wednesday May 1.Minister Humphreys promises that the change is about "putting money back in the pockets of working families". Child Benefit is currently paid to over 650,000 families - 1.2 million children in total - with an estimated expenditure of more than €2.1 billion in 2024.
Minister Humphreys spoke about the reasons for identifying the necessity for the change, saying "with many children now starting primary school at age five, together with the increase in pupils doing transition year, there has been an increase in the number of 18-year-olds still in secondary education."
If the child turns 18 after May 2024, Child Benefit will automatically be extended to either the 19th birthday or the expiry date of the current certificate.
