A former top cop specializing in child pornography removal urges parents to educate their children about online threats as they would about road safety. Mick Moran stresses the urgent need for increased internet policing, highlighting the global challenge of combating child sexual abuse material (CSAM) despite efforts by tech companies. He emphasizes the crucial role parents play in safeguarding their children online, urging open conversations about online dangers and appropriate responses.
An expert on child porn has warned parents to teach their children about lurking online dangers just as they would about crossing the road.
Of parental controls and safeguarding advice, Mr Moran said: "It is not complicated, it is an absolute no-brainer. You cannot and will not allow your child out to school and to cross the road by themselves without teaching them. You do not put kids in a dangerous scenario on their street without teaching them and it is the exact same for the internet.
Mr Moran retired as a Detective Sergeant with An Garda Siochana last year after more than three decades in the force. For 34 years, he investigated child sexual abuse with the Garda Domestic and Sexual Violence Investigation Unit and the Garda Computer Crime Unit.
