Indianapolis police on Thursday announced the arrest of 25-year-old Craig Chambers in the 2019 double homicide that newly-filed court records indicate was connected to a marijuana robbery.
Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana allows Indianapolis residents to share anonymous tips with law enforcement. Two successions of gunshots. A fleeing man falling into the bushes with a fatal wound. A red Monte Carlo peeling out of the parking lot shortly later, leaving behind two dead young men.
A probable cause affidavit states witnesses after the shooting on Oct. 7, 2019 told police they heard two rounds of gunshots, the first sounding like firecrackers, then three “pows.” Many people saw one man carrying a handgun running away from the source of the shots then fall into bushes, records state. They also saw one man run to a red Monte Carlo car in the parking lot and drive south.
More than two hours later, police were informed a man with a gunshot wound to the leg, later identified as Chambers, showed up to Community Hospital North. Police in the probable cause affidavit said Chambers told them he was standing in front of his uncle’s house when he got shot, and his mother drove him to the hospital. Police took a report.
Members of the police department’s Violent Crimes Unit brought Chambers in for questioning. According to the affidavit, Chambers said he went to a bar on the south side of Indianapolis with Day Jr. before the shooting but did not go inside. Instead, they talked with Miller over FaceTime and went to Miller's apartment.
Chambers explained he got into the Monte Carlo after the shooting and tried looking for Day Jr. He then threw his gun into the lake at the apartments. The affidavit said a search by a dive team from Indiana State Police did not turn up a gun. Interviews with witnesses in court records state Miller frequented the area of the shooting to sell drugs, which he dealt in large amounts, the affidavit said.
