John was a renowned actor, best remembered for his time as Jack Tripper on ABC sitcom Three's Company, a role which won him both a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe.
Although his stellar career was cut short when he was rushed to hospital and died at the age of 54 on the operating table. Suddenly, while on set, John suffered from a wave of sickness and was sweating profusely, complaining of chest pains. He then started vomiting.
John was taken to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, conveniently located across the road from the plot and, in a bizarre coincidence, the hospital where he was born. He arrived at 6pm but five hours later his loved ones were given the devastating news he was dead. John was initially treated by emergency room physicians for what they were sure was a heart attack - but they were wrong.
His condition only worsened and left doctors with no choice but to send him into surgery with a diagnosis of an aortic dissection. This is a form of a life-threatening medical emergency when a tear in the inner wall of the body's main artery allows blood to push through layers of the artery wall and, in turn, rip them apart. Had the signs of this been noticed sooner, it was argued, the actor could have pulled through.
When it was finally diagnosed, John was sent straight into surgery, but it was too late, and he was pronounced dead at 10:48pm. Following his death, Ritter's wife, Amy Yasbeck, sued a Burbank hospital for negligence as well as two separate wrongful death lawsuits filed against two doctors. One of the doctors had treated Ritter the night he died, and the other had interpreted the results of a body scan he received in 2001, proving artery damage.
A number of these lawsuits were settled out of court, for a total of $14 million, the equivalent of roughly £10 million. As for the two doctors, the jury split was 9–3 in favour of the two doctors, and therefore they were cleared of any charges. His wife has been very open about the fact that she believes her husband would still be alive if he had been correctly diagnosed sooner. She said: "John didn’t have a chance.

" The American TV star left behind four children, some of whom followed in their father's footsteps and became actors. Son, Jason, was nominated for his own Primetime Emmy Award for his role in Parenthood. He has also starred in Joan of Arcadia, Gravity Falls and the film, Frozen 2.
