Ireland is bracing for a significant temperature drop in the coming days as high pressure settles over the country. After a wet start to Sunday, drier and brighter conditions are expected. However, temperatures are set to plummet, especially overnight, with frost and ice likely from Tuesday onwards.

Chilly nights are on the horizon over the coming days as high pressure is set to take control from the middle of next week, according to Met Eireann. Sunday morning, February 2, witnessed a rather wet start for many counties, with reports of localized flooding in some areas following a significant amount of rainfall overnight.

However, conditions thankfully did not escalate to the tumultuous levels experienced during Storm Eowyn and Storm Herminia last weekend, which left tens of thousands without power in the wake of their destructive force. While temperatures have generally remained higher than average for this time of year, they are poised to take a sharp dip, particularly overnight, in just a few days' time. Tuesday night will bring temperatures below freezing, and this trend is expected to persist throughout the nighttime hours for the remainder of the week. Met Eireann forecasts a likelihood of frost and icy patches as a result. 'Starting out wet across many areas with spot flooding,' a Met Eireann spokesperson stated this morning. 'But it will be an improving picture as the last of the overnight rain clears off into the Irish Sea and sunny skies develop widely by late morning. Later this evening, the odd spot of drizzle will appear along Atlantic coasts. Highest temperatures will range from 7 to 10 degrees in mostly light to moderate southwesterly breezes, freshening a little across Atlantic counties later.''Tonight will be dry, apart from a patchy drizzle in Atlantic counties. The coldest temperatures will be experienced under clearer skies further east, with lows between 3 and 8 degrees. Southerly winds will gradually pick up.' 'Monday will be a breezy day with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle gradually arriving into Atlantic counties. Dry conditions are expected elsewhere during daylight hours with a mix of cloud and sunny spells. Highest temperatures will reach 10 to 12 degrees in fresh to strong southerly winds.' Regarding Tuesday, they added: 'Cloudy and wet to start with outbreaks of rain. However, drier and brighter conditions will quickly move in from the west. Scattered showers will follow later, mainly across Atlantic counties, with local hail and sleet. Temperatures will be cool, with highs ranging from 6 to 9 degrees in moderate to fresh west to southwest breezes. Cold and mostly clear overnight with frost and ice. Lowest temperatures will drop to -1 to +2 degrees in light southwest breezes.
