🔴 China has hit back after President Joe Biden called his counterpart Xi Jinping a dictator following a US diplomatic visit to Beijing
There were no specific breakthroughs at the Monday meeting, but the duo agreed to continue diplomatic engagement with more visits by US officials in the coming weeks and months.
Mr Biden said on Tuesday that US climate envoy John Kerry may go to Beijing soon and that he thought relations between the two countries were on the right path, suggesting that progress had been made during Mr Blinken’s trip. But despite Mr Blinken saying on Monday that the spy balloon “chapter” should be closed, Mr Biden chose to tackle the subject in his remarks on Tuesday.
“The reason why Xi Jinping got very upset in terms of when I shot that balloon down with two box cars full of spy equipment in it was he didn’t know it was there,” the US president said. “That’s a great embarrassment for dictators. When they didn’t know what happened. That wasn’t supposed to be going where it was. It was blown off course.”
Mr Biden also said that Mr Xi had been concerned over the Quad strategic security group, which includes Japan, Australia, India and the United States. The President said he had previously told his counterpart that the US was not trying to encircle China with the Quad.While Mr Xi has not responded to the comments directly, they are likely to displease him and could jeopardise any progress made during Mr Blinken’s visit.
