Chris Holtmann: Ohio State Buckeyes needed Iowa win 'like our next breath'
Ohio State men's basketball coach Chris Holtmann's full press conference after a 93-77 win against Iowa on Jan. 21, 2023.It depends on whom you ask. After becoming the first team in program history to lost five straight games all by single digits,
“Obviously it ain’t been the brightest lately, five Ls in a row,” he said. “It feels good. It does something for the players and the team’s confidence to get back in that win column. It’s really a momentum thing. With us being such a new team and we having a bunch of young guys, I think it was very important for those young guys to see us get back in that win column. I’ve experienced starting off slow in season play and finishing out up top.
During the streak, Ohio State had held a lead for a total of 64:30 and hadn’t led by more than 12 points at any point. Saturday, the Buckeyes led for 31:10 and led by double digits for the final 7:18 against an Iowa team that led the Big Ten in scoring at 77.9 points per game. That’s all accurate, and necessary. But to deny that this was a result the Buckeyes needed would be inaccurate.
“It does not look like a long-term injury,” Holtmann said. “I asked him why he dunked it and he said he was open. He felt good about that one. He did feel some pain but it does not look like a long-term injury.” “Bruce is great and I really believe he’s going to be one of the best point guards in the country here before his time is done,” Holtmann said. “No question about that in my mind … but he’s just got to continue to work through some things and physically get better.”
