A new report says Chris Rock was never asked if he wanted Will Smith removed from the Oscars after Smith slapped him onstage. The incident took place during the presentation of the best documentary award when Rock, who was ad-libbing, made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. Smith, who initially laughed at the joke but eventually took offense on behalf of his wife, who has alopecia, then climbed onto the stage and slapped Rock.
In the aftermath of the event, multiple narratives emerged and conflicting reports were given about the Academy’s response. Initially, it seemed as if the Academy had asked Smith to leave but he had refused, although this is now disputed and it seems as if no request was made. Instead, as producer Will Packer explained on Good Morning America, Rock was asked if he wanted Smith removed from the ceremony and Rock declined.
Whilst it may seem like a small distinction to make, this does change the narrative of events surrounding the slap quite significantly. Up until this point, the Academy has been clear that it was Rock’s decision not to take any action against Smith. This has resulted in a narrative where Rock appears to have humbly brushed off the incident, while Smith was allowed to remain seated and collect his Best Actor award less than an hour later.
This whole slap saga has been a mess of conflicting narratives and public statements, and this new twist does little to make it any clearer. We will likely never know whether or not Rock would have asked to have Smith removed from the Oscars, but things are definitely not helped by speaking on behalf of the involved parties.
