Christina Ricci discusses studio interference in Black Snake Moan. Across both box office hits and smaller indie projects, Ricci is an actor known for playing atypical characters with a darker side. Her breakout role came as Wednesday Addams in Barry Sonnenfeld’s The Addams Family in 1991 and its 1993 sequel, Addams Family Values. Ricci is now returning in a different role, Marylin Thornhill, in the upcoming Netflix reboot, Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega as the titular character.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In 2006, Ricci starred in Black Snake Moan. Written and directed by Hustle & Flow's Craig Brewer, the film follows a God-fearing Mississippi bluesman played by Samuel L. Jackson who, after finding a sex addict named Rae Doole severely beaten on the side of the road, holds the troubled young woman captive in his home and attempts to cure her of nymphomania.
We made the film and then somebody took over at the studio and decided we needed to sell it to teenage boys so they recut it and made it feel like rape porn which for me was a bit upsetting. My intention was to do my best work. I feel proud of my performance and I loved working with Sam Jackson and I loved working with Justin Timberlake. But ultimately that fun was a little bit of a black cloud for me.
How Black Snake Moan's Edit Hurt Movie's Original Message This actually isn't the first time Ricci has spoken out against the studio's handling of Black Snake Moan. In 2008, she commented on the film's promotional posters featuring her character in chains with the salacious tagline, "Everything in hotter down south.
Brewer intended Black Snake Moan more as an exploration of mental health issues, such as how Rae's nymphomania and drug abuse were the result of the sexual abuse she suffered when she was younger, and how her boyfriend Ronnie Morgan experiences panic attacks due to severe anxiety disorder. Based on Ricci's comments, it seems the studio was more interested in the film's depiction of sexualized violence, which resulted in a more sexualized promotional campaign and movie itself.
