From Ukraine, a veteran war correspondent finds that despite the deprivation caused by Putin and his troops, the country's resolve has strengthened.

On November 14–16, 1812, as Napoleon continued his retreat through frozen Russia, the temperatures plummeted to 18 degrees below zero. A forgotten dispatch from Napoleon’s propaganda machine,The roads were covered with ice; cavalry, artillery and baggage horses were killed every night, not by hundreds, but by thousands, especially German and French. Our cavalry was left without horses, artillery and baggage, without means of transportation.

As Christmas approaches, the deep freeze has now come to Ukraine, a conflict in which over 14 million people have been displaced, and many are taking shelter in unheated buildings without electricity. The International Rescue Committee estimates that 17.7 million Ukrainians need humanitarian assistance.

The World Health Organization says that, with the cold setting in across Ukraine, the conditions will increase the risk of hypothermia. This will also contribute to cases of pneumonia, heart attacks, strokes. The sick might not be able to reach health care facilities; an estimated 700 of them have been hit by Putin’s weapons—a similar tactic that he used in Syria to crush the resolve of the medical community, the humanitarian volunteers there, and the Syrian population.

Still, she admitted, she is luckier than most. When she doesn’t feel strong enough to climb, she goes to stay with friends. She is able to get out of Ukraine to visit her mother and small son in Krakow, Poland. She knows others are far worse off than she is. And yet there is no denying that for her and for so many across this brutalized country, life has essentially halted. Their days and nights, their mere existence, is incredibly hard.
