Churchill Downs has suspended trainer Saffie Joseph following the unexpected deaths of two horses. All of his horses, including Kentucky Derby entrant Lord Miles, have been scratched from future races pending further information about the deaths.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission Board of Stewards initially announced that the horses had been scratched in consultation with Joseph out of concern for the “health and welfare of our equine athletes.” But shortly thereafter, Churchill Downs Incorporated took the decision a step further, announcing it had suspended Joseph and any trainer directly or indirectly employed by Joseph, from entering horses at any Churchill Downs Incorporated racetracks.
But now Joseph is on the sidelines at least until necropsy results come back from the Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. A spokesman toldthere are no results as of yet, while Mark Partridge, the manager for Ramsey Farms, which owns both horses, told the Courier-Journal he did not anticipate results for upwards of three weeks.
Horse racing has long struggled to combat issues with performance-enhancing drugs. Two years ago, Churchill Downs disqualified Derby winner Medina Spirit and suspended six-time Derby winner Bob Baffert after Medina Spirit tested positive for an anti-inflammatory that is permissible for training but not for race days.
