Revenue officers found 30,000 cigarettes and 3kg of tobacco when they searched passenger
In what was described as a routine operation on Monday, customs officers searched a passenger who had arrived from Abu Dhabi.
The tobacco products – branded ‘Chesterfield’, ‘Pall Mall’, ‘Marlboro Gold’ and ‘Amber Leaf’ – have a retail value of €20,000, representing a potential loss to the exchequer of €14,000. The passenger, a Lithuanian man , was arrested. He appeared before judge Dermot Simms in the Dublin District Court on Monday and was remanded in custody to Cloverhill until Friday, March 1st, when he will again appear before the court.
The seizures are part of a Revenue operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products. Anyone with information relating to the smuggling or sale of illegal cigarettes or tobacco is asked to contact Revenue in confidence on Freephone 1800 295 295.
