With 24 non-roster invitees, Padres begin camp with 64 players on spring training roster
The Padres’ top-ranked prospect, CJ Abrams, is among 24 non-roster invitees, giving the team 64 players as big-league camp ramps up this week.
Abrams, 21, was hitting .296/.363/.420 in 42 games last year at Double-A San Antonio when he sustained season-ending leg injuries. He also injured his shoulder sliding into a base in the fall instructional league, preventing him from getting on the field in the Arizona Fall League. Abrams had been a full participant in minor league camp before the owners lifted their lockout last week, allowing the shortstop to shift over to the big-league side for the second year in a row. He could push his way to the majors this year,
although the Padres would have to find another spot with Fernando Tatis Jr. entrenched at Abrams’ current positionAdvertisement Other Padres top-30 prospects, as ranked by Baseball America, joining big-league camp as a non-roster invitee include right-handed reliever Kevin Kopps ,
