Hands up if you’re paid monthly and barely surviving despite there still being more than three weeks left in January? Well, one way to help fill the financial hole from the festive season, is claiming back the money you are owed from Revenue. From January 1st, you can claim some of your tax back on a whole host of expenses, from medical costs, rent fees, increased mortgage payments and working from expenses. The good news is it only takes a few minutes to complete the return on Revenue.

If you didn’t already know, if you work from home for any portion of the year, you can claim back 30% of your home’s heating, electricity and broadband costs. Employees can claim this relief for any day they worked from home, as long as they are not being paid the €3.20 daily allowance from their employer. Remember, 2024 was a leap year so your working from home days are divided by 366. To claim the ‘Remote Working Relief’, and any other expenses, you need to complete a 2024 Income Tax Return on Revenue.ie. Start be logging in to 'My Account' on Revenue.ie. There is a huge list of what you can claim tax back on from the previous four years, including GP visits, prescriptions, physiotherapy, non-routine dental procedures such as braces, laser eye surgery and IVF. You can find the long list of what medical costs qualify for a tax rebate on Revenue.ie. Other common expenses workers claim tax back on are medical insurance relief, flat rate expenses and tuition fees. You could also be due a substantial refund if you had a change in circumstance throughout the year, for example you changed jobs and were emergency taxed, only worked part of the year, or you were on unpaid maternity leave. The average person receives approximately €500 to €900 tax back per year and a staggering two-thirds of Irish taxpayers still do not submit a tax return. The main reasons employees cite for not claiming their tax back is because they either don’t think they will be entitled to anything, or they’re afraid they could end up with an underpayment. To which Mairead O'Driscoll, the expert behind The Tax Nerd says; “It is very rare you would owe money especially if you are an employee as the taxes you owe are done by your employer. “If you do happen to owe money, this can often be offset by the tax refund you are due. Please log on to Revenue and make your claims for tax back, as you are fully entitled to do so. You can go back and claim for the last four years, so if you haven't done it before you could be due a nice lump sum”
