often carries a contemporary edginess. “It took a while to adjust to performing in a corset—I forgot about that,” she says. “Everything’s harder when you can't breathe so well.” But again, the character’s arc followed her own: “Actually, her clothes are a lot more restrictive in her London mode than they are in Essex. That was helpful.” This was by design. “We have a warped understanding of what the Victorian era was actually like.
Then she got the call to star in the show. “I literally have pictures of myself in my trailer, in my corset as Cora, reading” Danes says. “And they’re quite discordant. They’re not terribly related.” She grins at this observation. As she’s being reminded, it’s a fun way to work.
