The former MEP is set to contest this month's general election in Dublin Central alongside the criminal and Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald
Former MEP Clare Daly says she has no problem running against Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch after he revealed he is running for the Dáil.
Ms Daly, who is running for a seat in the hotly contested Dublin Central constituency, also insisted she poses “no threat” to Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald - and would even support an alternative government if elected.READ MORE: Michael O’Leary’s Fine Gael endorsement ‘offensive’ to teachers It was put to Ms Daly, who famously lost her seat in the European Parliament earlier this year, that some would have concerns about Hutch’s criminal past, to which she responded: “He wouldn't be the first person with a criminal record to be in the Dáil - that is a matter for the people.
Asked about running against Ms McDonald, and whether she posed any threat to her amid concerns that votes for her would take away from the Sinn Fein leader, Ms Daly said: “I am hoping to take a seat in the longstanding tradition of strong independents that Dublin Central has always returned. Those people across the constituency have asked me to stand and I am going all out to do my best. That tradition has always co-existed with Sinn Fein and I pose no threat to Mary Lou.
The four-seat constituency is also being contested by sitting TDs Gary Gannon and Neasa Hourigan. Mr Gannon declined to comment on Hutch’s run yesterday, while Ms Hourigan could not be contacted before the publication of this article. He is further alleged to have told pals that he intends to set up his campaign headquarters in his old stomping ground at Corinthians Boxing Club in the inner city.
