Anna May Wong, the groundbreaking Chinese American actress, will be immortalized on coins as part of a US Mint program.
There was never any doubt in Anna May Wong’s mind. From the age of 11 onward, she knew she was meant to be on the silver screen. Every week her father, proprietor of the Sam Kee Laundry on North Figueroa Street in Los Angeles, doled out 25 cents each to his seven children. “We thought we were rich on Mondays,” Wong later mused.
Though her name dropped out of the limelight many decades ago, Anna May Wong’s life and legacy are well worth remembering. For one thing, she had an extraordinary knack for defying expectations—and not always in a good way. When she was born in 1905, her father was sorely disappointed; he had wanted a son. As Wong grew older, she held out against the tenets of what was expected of a good Chinese daughter, eschewing a life of domesticity for one in motion pictures.
Gibson, who is the first African American woman to hold her post at the mint, notes that “while [Wong] didn’t win awards as she should have, she really pushed the envelope and opened up the door for many others to come in.” Secretary of the Treasurywho is also the first woman to head the Department of Treasury in its 233-year history, echoes this sentiment.
