Under those circumstances, drivers face a fine of between $200 and $1,000.Steve Carrellas, a longtime advocate for the National Motorists Association, said in 2019 that the New Jersey law makes sense and most follow it, but that he hopes police use some discretion in enforcement.
More than 14,000 motorists in New Jersey have been found guilty of violating the law, according to municipal court records.
