Ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley, a 30-year diplomat, is the Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the Department of State. WASHINGTON, D. C. - During thirty years as a diplomat, Cleveland Heights native Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley served as U.S. Ambassador to Malta and survived an al-Qaida attack as U.S. consul general in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Now she works as the State Department’s Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer.

Abercrombie-Winstanley grew up near Lee Road, and recalls spending much of her youth on Coventry Road, frequenting Passport to Peru and other shops that sparked her interest in the world. She began taking Hebrew as a sophomore at Cleveland Heights High School and learning about Middle East culture. While getting degrees at George Washington and Johns Hopkins universities, she studied abroad in Tel Aviv. She volunteered for the Peace Corps and chose to be stationed in Oman. She met U.S.
