Cleveland ended 2021 with 170 homicides, the second worst year for homicides in the city since there were 175 in 1991. The total is down from 2020’s 193 homicides, the worst year for homicides since 1982.
Cleveland's homicide total in 2021 was less than in the record-setting 2020, but is still the second worst year for homicides in 30 years.CLEVELAND, Ohio — When Myesha Crowe spoke with people whose children were arrested for gun possession this year, she heard startlingly similar responses: gun violence on Cleveland’s streets is so prevalent that parents would rather risk a son or daughter getting arrested for carrying a gun for protection than be caught without one and get killed.
Crowe, director of the Cleveland Peacemakers Alliance, a violence interrupters program, said she fears the prevalence of gun violence in Cleveland could have a “normalizing” effect on young children, who grow up with the mindset of trying to survive instead of looking for ways to thrive.
