The world is on track to consume a record amount of coal this year as countries grapple with a global energy crisis.
Global coal use is set to increase by 1.2% in 2022, a marginal increase from last year but for the first time and beat the previous record set in 2013, according to a Friday report from the International Energy Agency, a policy advisory group to 31 member countries.
IEA expects global coal consumption will remain at similar levels through 2025 as demand remains robust in emerging Asian countries. "Europe, which has been heavily impacted by Russia’s sharp reductions of natural gas flows, is on course to increase its coal consumption for the second year in a row," the report says."However, by 2025, European coal demand is expected to decline below 2020 levels."
