Cobra Kai star William Zabka opens up about the future of the show and the Karate Kid Universe. The hit series debuted on YouTube Red, where it aired for two seasons before being acquired by Netflix in 2020. Taking place 34 years after the events of the first Karate Kid movie, it revisits the Miyagi-Verse narrative through a different point of view, following the now middle-aged Johnny Lawrence, who reopens the notorious Cobra Kai dojo and finds himself rivaling Daniel LaRusso once again.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Cobra Kai has become a critical success, earning its first Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series back in 2021 and generating consistent praise for its writing and action sequences. It also boasts a large and dedicated fanbase, contributing to its strong viewership and continuous renewals. The upcoming Cobra Kai season 5, announced last August, is set to be released on September 9 and will explore the fallout of the All-Valley Tournament.
"Yeah, there's no endgame at all, we'll keep this thing for another ten seasons. [Laughs] There's an endgame. Everything's pointing to a place on the map for sure. It's a matter of how many we're gonna get to do that, but there's definitely an endgame. We're gonna end the series, and then I think we're gonna do a trilogy of films."
As far as the near future is concerned, showrunner Jon Hurwitz recently revealed that Cobra Kai may extend past six seasons. He shared that the hope for the series was always to get to that point, but teased that new episodes beyond that are still possible.
The possibility of extending Cobra Kai's future should excite fans of the show, who already know that while there is no definite number of seasons planned, writing is ongoing. The streaming service is not generally known for long-running series, but with the viewership numbers attached to Cobra Kai, it seems something worth pursuing. Fans of its action and likable characters can look forward to Cobra Kai's return when season 5 hits Netflix on September 9.
