Coca-Cola has ordered a major recall of Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Tropico, Minute Maid and other beverages after detecting high levels of chlorate, which poses potential health risks
The manufacturer issued an urgent recall of several of its most popular fizzy drinks including Coke, Fanta and Sprite because they contain "higher levels" of a chemical called chlorate.
Exposure to high levels of the chemical compound can cause health issues including thyroid problems, especially among children and babies. The short-term effects of consuming it can cause nausea, vomiting, breathing problems and skin irritation. The drinks maker added the issue has affected "a very small number of imported cans" of Appletiser, Coca-Cola Original Taste, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke and Sprite Zero with production codes from 328 GE to 338 GE". The production code can be found on the bottom of the can or on the neck/label of the glass bottle.
"We do not have a precise figure, but it is clear that it is a considerable quantity," a Coca-Cola spokesman said when asked about the amount of products that are impacted.
