Dan Buettner, an expert on longevity and 'Blue Zones,' claims that drinking coffee before noon may be linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and a longer lifespan. He cites research from the European Heart Journal that found morning coffee drinkers were less likely to die from heart disease or any cause.
Dan Buettner, a renowned expert on the world's ' Blue Zones ', has highlighted a surprising beverage that could potentially contribute to longevity. Buettner, at 64 years old, has extensively explored six distinct 'Blue Zone' regions.
These areas are characterized by exceptionally long lifespans, often exceeding 80 years, attributed to a lifestyle encompassing regular physical activity, low stress levels, strong social connections, a diet rich in whole, locally sourced foods, and a low incidence of disease. Examples of Blue Zones include Okinawa Prefecture in Japan, Nuoro Province in Sardinia, Italy, the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, and Icaria in Greece. Buettner, taking to TikTok (@danbuettner), argued that a beverage highly popular in Ireland is one of the 'greatest longevity beverages out there', particularly when consumed before noon. He explained that drinking coffee, or two cups, before noon can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. Conversely, consuming coffee in the afternoon or evening may not offer this benefit and could potentially disrupt sleep. Buettner emphasizes that 'bad sleep equals shorter life.' This claim aligns with recent findings from the European Heart Journal, which analyzed over 40,000 adults to investigate the effects of coffee consumption at various times of day. The study revealed that individuals who drank coffee in the morning were 31% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease and 16% less likely to die from any cause compared to those who didn't drink coffee or consumed it throughout the day. Dr. Lu Qi, the lead author of the study at Tulane University, stated last month, 'This is the first study testing coffee drinking timing patterns and health outcomes. Our findings indicate that it’s not just whether you drink coffee or how much you drink, but the time of day when you drink coffee that’s important. We don’t typically give advice about timing in our dietary guidance, but perhaps we should be thinking about this in the future.' Dr. Qi further explained that a possible reason for the link between morning coffee consumption and reduced cardiovascular disease risk is that afternoon or evening coffee may disrupt circadian rhythms and hormone levels, such as melatonin. This disruption, in turn, could lead to changes in cardiovascular risk factors like inflammation and blood pressure. Buettner also advises against typical 'Western breakfast' ingredients like bacon and granola. Instead, he recommends a bowl of minestrone, a classic thick Italian soup, as a hearty and nutritious breakfast option. In a 2001 TikTok video, he states, 'So, I'm going to talk about a Blue Zone breakfast - what should you eat if you want to live to 100?' Take a cue from the world's longest-lived men, every single day in most Blue Zone villages they are eating a Sardinian minestrone, which I eat every single day. 'This is three beans and barley, you can buy those too it's a whole protein, plus about 20 different varieties of fibre which your microbiome will love. And then, of course, make sure to top that breakfast off with some good black coffee. Biggest source of antioxidants in the American diet right here in coffee and, don't forget, call your mother.
