A yellow low temperature and ice warning is in place across the country on Thursday with temperatures set to drop to minus five degrees overnight

Climate scientist Cathal Nolan warned the cold weather could last until December 17th with the possibility of heavy snow after that as “warmer, moister air” arrives. Speaking on Newstalk’s Pat Kenny Show, Mr Nolan also cautioned that temperatures at night could go as low as minus six degrees over the coming nights with day time temperatures not likely to rise above freezing.

A number of collisions were also reported at the Captain’s Table on the N21, while a car overturned at Clonkeen on the main regional road from Kilgarvan near Morley’s Bridge. Near Beaufort, a truck slid off the road. Motorists should slow down and be aware of other road users such as pedestrians, he also told RTÉ's Morning Ireland.

Sunny spells will follow, as wintry showers become confined to northern coastal counties. After dark, showers of sleet and snow will move into parts of the east, with highest temperatures of just one to five degrees, in light northerly or variable breezes. Much of the country will be dry on Friday with low winter sunshine. It will be very cold with icy stretches, some lying snow, as well as freezing fog in parts. Wintry showers will affect some northern and western coastal counties, possibly thundery near the coast. Highest temperatures are due to range between zero to four degrees.
