Mayo produced a remarkable second-half comeback while Championship and sunny days can't come soon enough for two of the best shooters in the country.

Mayo produced what seemed the most unlikely of second half comebacks against the All-Ireland champions Armagh on Saturday evening.

Last week came a badly needed victory against Tyrone, but rarely have I seen a win greeted with such criticism in Mayo. Much of that negativity is centred around the style of play, which has been a bone of contention locally for a few years now. On Saturday in the Athletic Grounds, from an attacking sense, things started out much the same as against Tyrone. Their first score took 16 passes and over a minute to put together, while their second score took over two minutes and involved 26 passes.

Mayo had 11 scores in the second half - not one of them involved any more than eight passes. For one, Colm Reape got a short kickout out to the top of the arc and three passes later Ryan O’Donoghue fires the ball over his shoulder on the turn. It was like watching a different team. With Kerry coming to Castlebar this Saturday it will be interesting to see what version of Mayo we see. I don’t believe a slow, controlled gameplan suits these players, but when they play on instinct and what comes naturally, they can put it up to any team out there on a given day.

Saturday at the Athletic Grounds highlighted glaring issues with the scoring arc. Right at the end of the first half Niall Grimley took a two-point free from the middle of the arc, with his shot dropping short. Thirty seconds later Conor Turbitt took an outrageous sideline ball from a tight angle that was only worth one point, which is absolutely farcical.
