The Crew feel strongly they have one of the best defenses in MLS. There were a lot of changes on the back line in the offseason to prevent the number of goals they gifted to teams. Etienne said getting that figured out as a team will help the attack produce more consistently.
“A lot of times last year I think we gave up a lot of easy goals because of a press breaking down or some mistake. We want to cut that out,” he said. “Then we know that the longer the game goes 0-0, we have a lot of quality between myself, Lucho , Yaw, Lucas, Pedro and Steven coming from the outside backs, Gyasi and Miguel — we know that we're going to be able to create chances.
With center back Josh Williams' status for Saturday uncertain after suffering a quad injury in the final preseason game, Degenek is likely to get a start in his Crew debut. As for striker, Miguel Berry was getting most of the starts in preseason, but that was because he had more time with the group than Zardes did, since he was busy with the U.S. men's national team. Who starts there could change week to week.

Back in their home building with a lot to prove after falling short of the postseason, the Crew do enough to see out a victory and open the season with three points — though, the attack will show early-season kinks to work out.
