Committee to hear calls for Roxy Theatre to be designated a heritage building

Saskatoon Heritage Society and council\u0027s heritage advisory committee both urge city to protect 1930s\u002Dera theatre.

Among the items up for discussion are whether a unique movie theatre on 20th Street warrants protection as a historic building, and the Saskatoon Fire Department’s priorities for where to put new fire stations.

The building was recently listed for sale by Magic Lantern Theatres, which has operated the theatre on 20th Street West since 2005. Designation as a municipal heritage property would protect the theatre from demolition or unsympathetic alterations.The fire department wants to keep focusing on shoring up service in the city’s westernmost neighbourhoods.

The program was modified in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to make it less costly for businesses to expand their outdoor seating options. Council extended the program in 2021 after a request from a group of businesses.
