'This is a story of heartache and belonging, of bereavement, parish identity, and the human spirit. But, most of all, a tale of love'
In the search for eloquence, fitting words to do justice to such an emotionally charged and profound moment, the audience had rarely felt so tongue-tied.
This is a story of heartache and belonging, of bereavement, parish identity, and the miraculous power of the human spirit. But, most of all, a tale of love. It is at these darkest hours, a brazier against the sudden, devastating eclipse of normality, that the wattage of the GAA burns brightest. Simple, practical things amount to a loving embrace, an impotent tribe's wordless way of announcing how deeply they care: Making sandwiches for mourners, marshalling car parks, providing a guard of honour at the church or graveyard. Being there. A shoulder to cry on, a crutch as a friend embarks on life's loneliest walk.
Every eye in the arena or watching the TG4 live streaming audience was trained on Loftus. There can hardly have been one who was not aware of the backstory. Then, it delivers moments like Sunday, an afternoon that burned with a light that cast a gleam on all those looking on, and we again give thanks for its existence.
There were no shortage of potential subjects about which to write this week, from the OPW's unconscionable squandering of almost half a million euro of public money on a wall, to Donald Trump's crass vulgarity in weaponising a mid-air collision over Washington DC for political ends.
