'The project was very financially risky': Controversial £250m Lancaster Canal Quarter plan dramatically paused
A controversial government-backed funding proposal for road and infrastructure aimed at supporting the construction of up to 9,000 new homes in south Lancaster has been paused – prompting a mix of reactions at Lancaster City Council.
Now, circumstances have changed. And a briefing for Lancashire County Council’s cabinet last week said the south Lancaster scheme is on-hold. “However, as a government planning inspector recently acknowledged, there is an overriding need for housing within the Lancaster district. All parties involved recognise that the south Lancaster area still has a part to play in meeting this housing need in the future. But now is the time to evolve our strategic vision of housing developments in our district.”
GREEN PARTY The deputy leader of the city council, Green Coun Caroline Jackson said: “Green councillors voted against the decision to accept government funding from the Housing Infrastructure Fund pushed through by Labour, some Conservatives and independent councillors in 2021. Green Coun Gina Dowding is both a city and county councillor. She said: “I am immensely relieved that the Conservative cabinet at Lancashire County Council has agreed to drop the idea of a new town in south Lancaster based on major road construction. And Labour’s recent about-turn on this project is welcome.
