A Libyan suspected of playing a key role in the Lockerbie bombing is set to face trial after being handed over to US authorities. The development was welcomed by victims’ families and a policeman at the scene called for “justice to be served” 34 years on from the tragedy. Abu Agila Masud was detained by US officials charged with preparing the bomb that brought down Pan Am Flight 103 on December 21, 1988, as it flew from Heathrow Airport to New York.
Charges unsealed in December 2020 allege Masud was directly responsible for setting the bomb’s timer. Further to this, the DoJ claims Masud was personally thanked by Libya’s then dictator Muammar Gaddafi for his role in the bombing, which was hailed by intelligence officers as a “total success”. Gaddafi later accepted his regime’s role in the attacks and paid compensation to the families of victims.
“I’d like to pay tribute to the hundreds of staff who have worked on this case over the decades, many of whom are no longer here. I just hope all of their efforts will be shown to be valuable and worthwhile.” Colin was off duty and coming home from a party when Pam Am 103 blew up over the town. He carried one victim, a 20-month-old child, into a makeshift morgue. He formed a bond with relatives of several of the victims and his work was recognised with an MBE in 2019.
