Cops seize £10k cash hidden under passenger seat of car from men suspected of cannabis cultivation

Police have been granted permission to continue to retain £10,000 in cash which was seized from two men suspected of being involved in cannabis cultivation.

A detective from Lancashire Constabulary appeared at Preston Magistrates' Court on Friday to make an application to allow the force to keep cash seized as part of an investigation into the cultivation and sale of cannabis. The officer described how police had seized around £10,000 from two Albanian nationals who were pulled over in St Vincent's Road on Wednesday May 31.

Magistrates heard that uniformed officers on patrol pulled over the Volkswagen Passat which had two men inside. Both the driver, Denis Dulla, and the passenger, Orges Mjeshtri, were unable to speak English and were arrested after police searched the vehicle and a property and found the cash. The detective said: "Intelligence suggests that Albanians are involved in the cultivation and sale of cannabis. Cash was discovered under the passenger seat. The home address was also searched.

"Their immigration status was checked. Mr Mjeshtri faces potential deportation and Mr Dulla has made an application for asylum. Both signed a disclaimer [regarding the seizing of the cash] and both seemed to say they had no interest." Magistrates agreed to allow police to retain the cash for six months to allow for DNA and fingerprint evidence to be obtained. The application will expire on December 1.
