Trying to save some money while furthering their career and education, Cork couple Laurie O’Donnell and Alan O’Brien opted to build a one-bedroom wooden cabin in her parents’ garden – here, she reveals why their little home is perfect for them
When Laurie O’Donnell and Alan O’Brien decided to start a new business and go back to college respectively, they needed to think outside the box with regards to housing – so they built a wooden home that is perfect for the two of them. The couple constructed their house at the back of Laurie’s family home in Cork city. “We are both in our late 20s. Both trying to survive in a country that unfortunately is not supporting its educated youth,” says Laurie, who is a teacher.
Since the house is in the city, both of them can be close to work and college, without major commutes. This is the couple’s first home. “It is by no means a big home that we could live in forever but it’s the most quaint, cosy, little home that is perfect for us both.” “The smell from the wooden ceilings and walls, the comfort and heat and the rustic look is just wonderful. Whenever we have the chance to buy a home ourselves, I will 100 per cent incorporate wooden features into the home.”
The plumbing and electricity is connected to the main house. The cabin’s electricity is run off solar panels and is heated by eco electric radiators. Due to the fact the house is wooden, it retains the heat quite a lot, so there’s no need to heat the cabin 24/7. “If anything, windows are opened every day to let the air circulate and to regulate the temperature,” Laurie explains.
