Despite the essential role they play in society, it seems certain cohorts in society do not hold the same respect for them, persistently harassing and stealing from them
Fast food delivery riders in Cork have claimed their jobs are becoming increasingly unsafe in the face of escalating bike thefts, with an average of three being stolen each day.
As a part of their job, they enter shops and takeaway premises in order to collect orders they then deliver. In order to do this, they leave their bikes unattended outside. Even unsuccessful thefts can incur hefty costs as locks sometimes need to be replaced, or the bike itself could have been damaged by the thieves. Delivery riders are usually responsible for buying their own kit and according to Glassdoor they typically earn an average of €17,500 per year so replacing even small bits of gear can be a burdensome cost.
The thefts are not just occurring while riders are out on a job. In fact, one reported that he spoke with Gardaí and provided CCTV footage after two young men attempted to steal the motorbike belonging to his neighbour who used it for deliveries. Another passenger grabbed the e-scooter while getting off at their stop. Thankfully others aboard the bus intervened and the scooter was returned to her without too much hassle.
