Theresa Hickey wanted to make sure her son could attend a debs ball like everyone else his age, so she decided to hold an autism-friendly debutante ball this September

Theresa Hickey has organised an autism-friendly debs ball after her son David couldn’t attend his own.

Read more: Niamh Ennis: 'I lost my fiancé, my father and my mother in a short space of time and my life changed drastically' Theresa told RSVP Live: “David was in a special class attached to a mainstream school so the debs would have been the normal debs that everyone would have that the students run themselves. That was never going to be autism-friendly for him.

“The music and the lights will be lower. We have two DJs Stevie G and DJ Jerry, who is autistic himself. It’s buffet-style food so when you buy tickets on Eventbrite, you can write down what you want to eat and that’s what we’re providing. You can also bring your own food if you don’t want to eat what’s there or they don’t feel comfortable eating at a hotel.

“He’s been at every meeting. He’s very excited. Looking up at his sister’s debs dress from two years ago, I just thought, ‘Why couldn’t he have one too?’ He’s thrilled. It also turns out the school that he’s going to isn't having a debs now, it fell through. All his friends are going now and they wouldn’t have had one otherwise. There’s people that have been out of school for a few years, who weren’t able to go at the time for whatever reason, they’re coming back and coming to this debs.
