The mum of one suffers from stage 4 cancer and has had her right hand amputated as a result, she is calling for change to be made to the Primary Medical Certificate eligibility criteria

Cork mum, Jane O’Keeffe, hailing from Frankfield has shared her story following a devastating diagnosis of stage 4 cancer.

The 38-year-old mother's battle began when she noticed discomfort in her right hand roughly three years ago while out walking with her then five-month-old baby Róisín.Initially brushed off as strain from pushing a buggy, the discomfort persisted, eventually leading her to seek medical attention. To her shock, what started as a nagging soreness revealed a sinister reality – a 3.9 cm tumour nestled within her hand.

Life post-amputation presented a myriad of challenges, from relearning simple tasks like dressing and tying her hair to navigating the intricacies of driving. However, amidst her struggles, like many single-arm amputees she discovered that existing schemes for amputees required the loss of both hands to qualify for benefits such as VRT exemption or a Blue Badge. She and others in similar situations have rallied for change, advocating before governmental bodies for inclusive policies that recognise the unique needs of single-arm amputees. The road ahead for Jane remains uncertain, with her cancer progressing to stage 4.
