Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn joined the judiciary committee’s nine other Republicans in disavowing Jackson, casting her as a liberal activist who is soft on crime and intent on creating “new rights out of whole cloth,” as Cornyn put it.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, center, talks with Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., right, as Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, March 23, 2022, during her confirmation hearing. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, sits at left. The U.S. Senate began voting Monday on the confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, with both of Texas’ Republican members opposing the nomination.
“A judge must call balls and strikes,” Cornyn said. “And given what I’ve seen, and her unwillingness to disclose her judicial philosophy and disavow an expansionist view of unenumerated rights, I have concerns that Judge Jackson will be pinch hitting for one team or the other.” The committee deadlocked 11-11 on Monday, but under Senate rules, the nomination can now move to the full floor; a final vote is expected later this week.
